| Our home is in West Cumbria, between Whitehaven and Workington, just south of Distington, in the small hamlet of Howgate. We only have fifteen houses in Howgate, together with a hotel. Most of the surrounding area is given over to farming. | ![]() |
We moved to our present house, as a temporary measure, in 1979 and we are still here. It looks as though we might stay.

Living here we have the sea to the West of us and the mountains of the Lake District in the other direction. This means that we have the opportunity to sail and walk, and to ski in the winter if we are lucky enough to get some snow. It also means that we get more than our fair share of wet and windy weather.
Our nearest town is Whitehaven which is famous on both sides of the Atlantic as George Washington’s Grandmother is buried here.
